Healthy Fats in Nuts
One of the greatest food myths is that nuts are high in fat and contribute to higher levels of bad cholesterol, also known as LDL. Quite the opposite is true. Nuts are high in fat, but they are high in good fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated) and have been shown to lower LDL cholesterol levels. A 2003 FDA-approved health claim suggests eating 1.5 ounces daily of most nuts, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease. Yes, it is true that nuts are high in calories (23 almonds, about 1 ounce, equal 165 calories). However, having a handful of nuts as a daily snack can become part of a heart-healthy diet.
